Privacy Policy for FocusGuard

Last updated: April 4, 2026

Blue Torus ("we," "us," or "our") built FocusGuard as a free application. This Privacy Policy explains how FocusGuard handles information when you use our app.

The short version:

We collect nothing, transmit nothing, and store everything locally on your device.

Information Collection and Use

FocusGuard does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data to external servers. The app operates entirely on your device. No information is sent to Blue Torus, any third party, or any external service. There is no backend server, no analytics platform, no crash reporting service, and no advertising network integrated into this app.

FocusGuard does not require an account, registration, email address, or login of any kind.

The only data stored on your device is:

  • App settings: Whether blocking is enabled or disabled, per-app toggle states (Instagram, YouTube), and your preferred schedules. Stored using Android SharedPreferences.
  • Block statistics: A count of how many times the blocking overlay was triggered, organized by date. Stored in a local SQLite database on your device.
  • Onboarding inputs: If you optionally enter your name, age, or estimated screen time during onboarding, this information is stored locally in SharedPreferences on your device only. It is never transmitted anywhere.
  • Schedule configurations: Time windows, selected days, and per-app blocking preferences for any schedules you create. Stored locally in SharedPreferences.
  • Diagnostic logs: A small rolling log file (maximum 500 KB) stored on your device for troubleshooting purposes. This log contains only technical service events and does not include any personal information, message content, or screen content.

None of this data ever leaves your device.

Accessibility Service Usage

FocusGuard uses Android's Accessibility Service to detect when you navigate to Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts within those apps. This is the core functionality that makes the app work.

What the Accessibility Service does:

  • Detects which app is currently in the foreground (limited to Instagram and YouTube only).
  • Reads the accessibility node tree of Instagram (com.instagram.android) and YouTube (com.google.android.youtube) to identify whether the Reels or Shorts section is active.
  • Triggers a visual blocking overlay when Reels or Shorts content is detected.

What the Accessibility Service does NOT do:

  • It does not read, log, or store any text content, messages, direct messages, comments, captions, or posts.
  • It does not read, capture, or access any passwords, usernames, or login credentials.
  • It does not access your photos, videos, camera, microphone, or media files.
  • It does not access your contacts, call history, or location.
  • It does not function as a keylogger or input monitor of any kind.
  • It does not monitor any app other than Instagram and YouTube. This restriction is enforced at the system level through the packageNames attribute in the Accessibility Service configuration, which limits event delivery to these two apps only.
  • It does not transmit any data to any server, third party, or external service.

Technical detail: The Accessibility Service configuration file explicitly declares android:packageNames="com.instagram.android,com.google.android.youtube", which instructs Android to only deliver accessibility events from these two apps to FocusGuard. Events from all other apps (including banking apps, messaging apps, keyboards, and browsers) are never received by FocusGuard.

Overlay Permission Usage

FocusGuard uses the "Display Over Other Apps" permission (SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW) to show a blocking overlay when Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts is detected. This overlay is a visual intervention displayed on top of the app to interrupt mindless scrolling.

The overlay:

  • Displays a motivational message and two action buttons ("Go Back" and "Allow 1 Minute").
  • Does not capture screenshots or record screen content.
  • Does not read, intercept, or interact with any data within Instagram or YouTube.
  • Does not access any content behind the overlay.

A smaller overlay is also used to cover the Reels and Shorts navigation buttons within each app, providing a visual indicator that the tab is blocked.

Internet and Network Access

FocusGuard does not request or use the INTERNET permission. The app makes zero network calls. There is no capability within the app to transmit data to any external destination. This is verifiable by inspecting the app's Android Manifest, which contains no INTERNET permission declaration.

Third-Party Services

FocusGuard does not integrate any third-party services, libraries, or SDKs that collect, process, or transmit user data. There is no:

  • Analytics platform (no Google Analytics, Firebase Analytics, or similar)
  • Crash reporting service (no Crashlytics, Sentry, or similar)
  • Advertising network or ad SDK
  • Social media SDK
  • Remote configuration service
  • Cloud storage or sync service

Children's Privacy

FocusGuard does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children under the age of 13. Since the app collects no personal data whatsoever and requires no account creation, there is no mechanism through which children's data could be collected or stored.

Data Security

Because FocusGuard stores all data locally on your device and transmits nothing externally, the security of your data is governed by your device's own security measures (screen lock, encryption, etc.). We recommend keeping your device secured with a PIN, password, or biometric lock.

If you uninstall FocusGuard, all locally stored data (settings, block statistics, schedules, and diagnostic logs) is automatically removed by Android as part of the standard app uninstall process.

Your Rights Under GDPR

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Because FocusGuard does not collect, process, or store any personal data outside your device, and no data is transmitted to Blue Torus or any third party, there is no personal data processing that falls under GDPR obligations. All data remains exclusively on your device under your control.

You can delete all FocusGuard data at any time by uninstalling the app or clearing the app's data through Android Settings.

Your Rights Under CCPA

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) provides you with specific rights regarding your personal information. Because FocusGuard collects no personal information as defined by the CCPA, and no data is sold, shared, or disclosed to any third party, there is no personal information to access, delete, or opt out of selling.
